Goth thread

Had a go at a quick Twitter thread tonight as I listened to The Sisters Of Mercy's First And Last And Always album. The results were er, mixed. And I think it only goes to show that spontaneous Twitter threads probably aren't the best format for trying to write about music ...

Goth thread!

1: Hmm ... listening to the Sisters Of Mercy's First Last And Always, an LP I probably haven't played for a full 30 years (really), and one of the few "high goth" records that survived a clear-out from my records about 20 years ago.

2: Would I have bought this if I wasn't a 21yo goth (or semi-goth) when it came out? No. Would I buy it now? No. Would I even hold onto the copy I already owned. Er, not sure!

3: And ... what strange stuff. Broody and melancholic yes, but also touches of what seem to be Celtic arrangements/ornamentation, lots of mid-tempo drums (OK, a drum machine) and lots of punchy semi-commercial choruses.

4: Plus Eldritch's voice: like a deeper Bowie croon, not at all to my taste but admittedly pretty distinctive, especially when it goes into a sort "driven, semi-manic" mode (eg No Time To Cry).

5: And now it's time to bid First Last And Always goodbye and walk, walk, walk, walk, walk awaaaaay from this goth thread ...

Hmm, it's not called First Last And Always, it's called First *And* Last And Always. A better title. And it just goes to show that I really don't know that much about this LP ...

The end!
