Do you remember?, Podcast #172 (Nov 2019)

I suppose I have to admit that one of the good things about the digital age for people who like music is ... YouTube. Yeah, annoying though it is, this Google-owned mega-company has - I suppose - provided a lot of casual pleasure/instruction. Clicking between Captain Beefheart playing on a beach at Cannes one minute and some new techno release the next, you're .... in musical heaven. Fantastic! Or maybe not. Maybe, when you think about it, there's something missing. Something like a guiding hand. A light to lead you out of this tunnel of endless - but confusing - possibility. Perhaps it's that old idea of the need for "curation"? Someone with superlative taste and knowledge to enlighten us, chopping out our path through the bewilderingly-overgrown music jungle? Hmm, maybe not that either. I know! It's all much simpler than this. YouTube started on its road to global domination in 2005, the same year that the Niluccio monthly compilations burst upon the world. Yes, yes, it's all clear now. Those wily silicon valley plotters had to snuff out the competition. They saw where the threat lay - they had to take down Niluccio on noise!

God - it's all a conspiracy. They've been trying to crush me. For 14 years they've been doing it - adding new features, providing ever more attractive advertising rates to all the big ad firms - anything, anything to bring me down. What can I do? They're a huge US corporation making billions a year. I'm a one-man band with an eight-year-old laptop in my flat in Hackney. And I'm locked into a fight to the death. Oh, to go back! To return to those happy pre-YouTube times. When there was only a choice between our own few tatty records and CDs, or the stuff on the radio. When Niluccio on noise itself was still waiting to be born. It's a long time ago. Do you remember ...?
