Beyond themselves, Podcast #184 (Nov 2020)

"Won't you tell your dad to get off my back/Tell him what we said about Paint It Black ...". But what did they say about Paint It Black. Maybe Alex Chilton explained that line at some point, but probably he didn't, which is better. Let it just hang there. Teenage rebellion? Breaking off from the squares, the dads, the rules? Maybe. These days no-one listens to Paint It Black because it's now er, square dad's music. Stuff the boring older generation still sometimes goes on about. Which brings me to Podcast #184, the ultimate coronavirus collection. Music for these lonesome lockdown times. Why so? Because you could say it's about getting people to think beyond the Rolling Stones, beyond Big Star, beyond all that. Or put it another way - to think beyond family gatherings, beyond the five days of Christmas and the sentimentalised death wish of the "festive season". Yeah, it's a tall order, but you've got to get people to think ... beyond themselves.
