The music of the flies

"... the humbler music of Nature has a profound connection, is in secret harmony with the season when it was first heard. We may say that it is born of the essence of that time, that it shares, quite simply, in its charm. Being born of it, of the cries of departing swallows when the early frosts have come, of the buzzing of flies in the heat of summer, it is but natural that those musicians should speak of it to us, since, itself, it tells us of their songs ... But if summer did not come with its heat, which nothing else can counterfeit, would not that spell, think you, the end of all the music of the flies?"

-Marcel Proust, Jean Santeuil
