Against the evidence, Podcast #179 (June 2020)
And so the months drag by. No gigs, just the ersatz equivalents - living room sessions, stuff from people's kitchens. Not bad - but not the real thing! Where will it all end? Is there to be no return to "normal", to the status quo ante? No more gigs in stuffy, scummy, tight little venues where people exhale their horrible beer-tainted breath right in your face as they shout some idiotic "witticism" about what they're seeing the band do on stage? Yes, how we miss it! The ill-mannered barging through you that goes on with "cool" people who don't bother with "excuse me's" as they force you aside on their way to link up with their also-very-cool mates. The bar staff too bored/aloof to serve you with anything approaching graciousness as they slop the half pint of Stella all over your hand/shirtsleeve. The self-important sound engineer taking an eternity to soundcheck a band who will still sound terrible when they finally start playing. Oh, the glamour, the excitement, the pure teenage kickery of it all ... So yes, we can only hope for a return to the seedy thrill of witnessing live music in small venues. I continue to wait, to hope, in fervent expectation. To believe. Against the evidence ...
